A Romantic Wedding Reading.
Finding the perfect wedding reading can be surprisingly difficult. You want something meaningful and personal, but not too formal, overly sentimental or like a reading you've heard at every wedding before.
That's why we're creating our Wedding Poems Worth Reading series, a collection of beautiful wedding poems and readings that we think are genuinely worth considering for your wedding ceremony.
A Vow by Wendy Cope
A Vow by Wendy Cope is a beautiful choice for couples looking for a romantic wedding reading that feels honest, warm and personal.
What we particularly love about this poem is that it doesn't rely on grand declarations or traditional ideas of perfect love. Instead, it captures something much more relatable, the reality of choosing someone, loving them and making a promise to share your life together. It's romantic without being overly sentimental, heartfelt without feeling heavy and has a lovely sense of warmth and humour running through it.
For couples looking for modern wedding readings or wedding poems that don't feel too traditional, this is one we'd definitely put on the list. A good wedding ceremony reading should feel like it belongs to you as a couple. Whether you're planning a relaxed, modern wedding or a more traditional ceremony, the right words can make the moment feel incredibly personal. So, if you're currently searching for wedding reading ideas, looking for something beautiful to have read during your ceremony, or simply want some inspiration for your own wedding day, have a read of A Vow below.
And if you're still looking for the perfect words for your ceremony, keep an eye out for more from our Wedding Poems Worth Reading series. We'll be sharing romantic wedding poems, funny wedding readings, modern ceremony readings and some of our favourite words for celebrating love.
A Vow by Wendy Cope
I cannot promise never to be angry;
I cannot promise always to be kind.
You know what you are taking on, my darling –
It’s only at the start that love is blind.
And yet I’m still the one you want to be with
And you’re the one for me – of that I’m sure.
You are my closest friend, my favourite person,
The lover and the home I’ve waited for.
I cannot promise that I will deserve you
From this day on. I hope to pass that test.
I love you and I want to make you happy.
I promise I will do my very best.
